LAGOONS
The SACCA DI GORO Lagoon
Macroalgal blooms, anoxia, sulphides and massive death of benthic organisms became key words. This site is famous due to clams (Tapes philippinarum) farming which is now extended over half of the lagoon surface. Contrarily to what is the common perception, we believe that molluscs farming in confined environments stimulates eutrophication and macroalgal blooms due to fast nutrient recycling.
The CURONIAN Lagoon
This is the largest European Lagoon, separated from the Baltic Sea by a sand dune. It exhibits impressive cyanobacterial blooms, with dramatic effects on the water column and surface sediments. We did two very nice field campaigns in Lituania (March and July 2009), crossing Europe with our van filled with instruments.
The ARCACHON BAY (France)
During the European Projects CLEAN; ROBUST and NICE (1992-1998) we did a number of field campaigns in the Arcachon Bay. This macrotidal bay host meadows of Zostera nolti over most of the surface and is famous for oyster farming. In the picture the Dune du Pyla, that borders the lagoon.
The ORBETELLO Lagoon
And also we followed projects in CESINA, ORISTANO, and LESINA lagoons in Italy
